Deviation and defamiliarization are among important topics in the literary theory of formalism. To explain these terms, one must first have a right conception of the standard language. This article is to explain deviation and defamiliarization in the Qur'an using a descriptive-analytical approach. The most important achievements of this inquiry is that the language of the Qur'an can be considered as a non-normative language yet presented in form of standard language. It should be noted, though, that deviation from norms in the Qur'an does not imply that God's words contradict linguistic rules and analogies, yet its way of expressing is different. If we consider the standard language as the criterion for marking defamiliarization, we can account for defamiliarization in the Qur'an, but if we consider the public and their minds as the criterion, then we cannot find defamiliarization in the Qur'an since the text becomes normal over time for the researchers who work on its aesthetics although its literary and scientific elegance are inexhaustible. But what should the criteria be? The language of the Qur'an can be examined either against the dialects of the Arabic language and with reference to language of the society, or against a set of linguistic rules (phonetic, syntactic, and morphological) as indicators, norms, and criteria, and then we can measure the literary and artistic language against them. Yet, literary language is deviation from the grammatical norms and rules.
