Shawqi Bzai’ is a Lebanese Shi’ite and an Arab contemporary literature modernist poet. Although he is one of the leading figures in modernism, he has not done away with the ancient heritage and has skillfully tied modernism to the ancient heritage. In his poets, he has made use of various types of deviations, particularly ancient or archaistic ones. The present paper seeks to investigate his poems to analyze the various aspects of archaism and antiquity-centered attitudes and thereby demonstrate the extent to which he has been successful in combining ancient heritage components with novel poetical purposes as well as express what he has been in pursue of by taking advantage of such archaistic methods. Based on the findings, archaism has been manifested in Shawqi Bzai’s poem in four forms. Firsly, he has used mythical and historical characters from Iranian, ancient Roman and ancient Arabic cultures, for instance, Shahrzad, Phoenix, Alexander, Zarqa’e Yamame. Secondly, he has taken advantage of the characteristics of religious-historical figures, especially the divine prophets, including Noah, Jesus and Moses. Thirdly, he has introduced historical subjects and incidents like the story of the birds called “Ababil”, the story of “the queen of Saba’” and Salomon and the events pertaining to Andalus Rock. Finally, he has applied archaism to his poems through making use of ancient words, jargons and word combinations like Amma Sabahan, Dagger, Hadi Al-‘Eys and so forth.
