The word muqtaṣid in the Holy Qur’an denotes moderation and balance in behavior and consumption. It refers not only to personal temperance in daily life but is also closely associated with key economic concepts such as justice (ʿadl) and equity (qiṣṭ). In various Qur’anic verses, Almighty God calls upon His servants to avoid extravagance and wastefulness, and encourages moderate giving (infāq), emphasizing the significance of these directives in promoting social and economic justice within the Islamic community.
This study applies a structuralist semantic analysis, based on library research, to examine the term muqtaṣid in the Qur’an. It focuses on the syntagmatic (collocational) and paradigmatic (substitutional) relationships of this word within Qur’anic texts, selected commentaries, and classical linguistic sources.
A deeper analysis reveals that muqtaṣid can serve as a practical guide for implementing Islamic economic principles in everyday life. According to the findings, the characteristics of a muqtaṣid individual span both worldview and behavioral dimensions, including traits such as reasonable giving, avoidance of excess and deficiency, moderation in consumption, frugality, fairness, justice, respect for others’ rights, compassion, steadfastness, and loyalty. These qualities collectively contribute to the formation of a healthy and balanced society.
Thus, a proper understanding of this concept plays a meaningful role in realizing economic and social justice and in exploring the existential dimensions of muqtaṣid through Qur’anic semantics and ethical models
