In cognitive linguistics, metaphor is fundamentally a tool for understanding and conceptualizing abstract ideas. Rather than being merely a literary device or a linguistic anomaly, metaphor plays a vital and automatic role in language, appearing more prominently within concepts than in individual words. This study seeks to explore the conceptual metaphor of death through semantic analysis, moving beyond the traditional and formal understanding of death as simply the biological end of life. Focusing on the context of Persian ghazal poetry, the research aims to uncover the hidden semantic and cognitive layers associated with death and to explain why death is often used in meanings beyond its literal sense—the departure of the soul from the body. The study examines how these metaphorical meanings manifest in the language of Sanai and within the ghazal genre, questioning the extent to which they align with or contrast against the primary meaning of death. Additionally, it investigates how Sanai, as a ghazal poet, portrays the concept of death as experienced by lovers and mystics. This is clarified by analyzing the various metaphorical concepts and their modes of formation. The author applies different theories of conceptual metaphor to identify metaphorical units, justify the use of metaphor in the context of the ghazal, and explore Sanai’s overarching mental metaphor of death, including its source and target conceptual domains in his poetry. The frequent use of the term “death” and its derivatives in the ghazals suggests that, beneath the surface of the poetry, death serves as a metaphor for separation and longing from the beloved. Key conceptual domains related to this metaphor include sacrifice, love, the beauty of the beloved, and bloodshed. Keywords: Sanai’s Ghazals, Conceptual Metaphor, Cognitive Semantics, Concept of Death.
