The Holy Quran, as the supreme expression of divine truths manifested through the words and phrases of the Arabic language, requires a deep understanding of its concepts in order to access those truths. One of these Quranic terms is hubūt (descent), meaning to come down from above. The nature and manner of hubūt, due to its controversial character, have long attracted scholarly attention from various perspectives throughout history. The necessity of examining this word lies in the implicit sense of loss embedded in its meaning, which becomes evident when actualized. Yet in the Quran, hubūt is accompanied by words such as peace, blessings, and guidance—seemingly at odds with this sense of loss. Moreover, the presence of divine mercy does not correspond with the assumption of hubūt as a purely spatial descent. This study, therefore, seeks to address and resolve these apparent contradictions within the Quranic context. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the article explores the semantics of hubūt. The findings demonstrate the invalidation of certain hypotheses regarding collocational, substitutive, and oppositional relations. Instead, the literal meaning of hubūt—a fall from above—is shown to coexist with, and indeed be accompanied by, blessing and mercy.
