Semantics, a major branch of linguistics, investigates the scientific analysis of meaning and examines lexical items within their broader semantic systems. One methodological approach that has recently gained prominence in literary and linguistic research is the analysis of paradigmatic relations, which explores networks of lexical substitution within a semantic field. Through the reconstruction of such semantic networks and the examination of words within their Qurʾānic contexts, it becomes possible to achieve a more precise understanding of lexical meaning. The root gh f r (forgiveness), together with its numerous derivatives, is among the frequently occurring lexical roots in the Qurʾān. A detailed examination of this root and its derivatives, along with an analysis of their semantic relations with other Qurʾānic lexemes, contributes to a deeper understanding of how the Qurʾān conceptualizes divine forgiveness and the relationship between God and human beings. The present study seeks to identify the paradigmatic substitutes of the root gh f r and its derivatives in the Qurʾānic lexicon. Using a descriptive analytical method, the research demonstrates that the root gh f r exhibits paradigmatic proximity to several lexemes, including kaffara, ʿafā, ḥiṭṭah, jāwaza, baddala, tāba ʿalā, and ṣafḥ. Each of these lexemes expresses a particular dimension of divine forgiveness within its specific contextual usage. The analysis further shows that these related terms reveal distinct semantic aspects of maghfirah, such as covering, effacing, pardoning, overlooking, and facilitating return. Consequently, the Qurʾānic concept of forgiveness emerges as a multilayered semantic construct that extends far beyond the narrow notion of merely concealing sin.
