In sacred religious texts, conceptual meanings frequently emerge beyond the explicit lexical level and are formed within deeper layers of discourse, action, and collective memory. Accessing these layers requires a clearly defined analytical framework capable of tracing the gradual development of meaning across successive semantic strata. Within this perspective, semantic analysis—through the systematic identification of relations such as hypernymic inclusion, phonetic similarity, graphic similarity, and various types of semantic opposition, including formal, distributional, positional, and implicational markedness—provides an appropriate conceptual model for examining the dynamics of meaning in religious discourse. Employing a descriptive–analytical method, the present study investigates the internal mechanisms of semantic signification in Imam al Sajjād’s supplication for the frontier guards (Duʿāʾ Ahl al Thughūr) contained in al Ṣaḥīfa al Sajjādiyya. Emphasizing the necessity of a layered semantic framework, the study analyzes the role of linguistic elements, traces semantic shifts, and explains how meaning gradually emerges and develops within the internal structure of the supplication. To achieve this objective, several central semantic categories were extracted from the text of the supplication and subsequently classified and analyzed within a semantic analytical model. The findings indicate that the supplication is structured upon an interconnected network of semantic relations that strengthens both the linguistic cohesion and the rhetorical force of the text. Part of this semantic structure relies directly on truth value relations among propositions, such that the acceptance or rejection of one proposition influences the logical status of other related propositions. Furthermore, the presence of layered presuppositions and a polysemous semantic structure allows the text of the supplication to be interpreted across multiple semantic and discursive levels.
