شBinary oppositions constitute one of the principal analytical tools in structuralist approaches to literary texts, which maintain that textual meaning emerges through the interplay of contrasting pairs. Semantic oppositions—typically structured around the dominance of one element over another—contribute to shaping narrative organization and reflect the underlying worldview and ideological orientation embedded in a literary work. Palestinian resistance literature, which narrates the oppression and suffering experienced by the people of Palestine, has developed along two distinct interpretive trajectories. Some contemporary Palestinian novelists adopt an anti war perspective and, after depicting the suffering resulting from decades of conflict between Arabs and Jews, propose reconciliation and peaceful coexistence as the ultimate solution to the Palestinian issue. In contrast, other works emphasize the ideology of resistance and anti imperial struggle, rejecting the possibility of reconciliation between the Palestinian people and the occupying power. Employing a descriptive, library based research method, the present study analyzes Adania Shibli’s novel Minor Detail through the analytical framework of binary oppositions. The findings indicate that Shibli constructs the narrative through multiple layers of opposition, including ethnicity (Jew/Arab), gender (man/woman), roles (aggressor/victim and killer/killed), temporality (past/present), spatiality (natural/urban and open/closed), and conceptual contrasts (major/minor, light/darkness, and life/death). By foregrounding these oppositional structures and organizing the narrative around a series of interrelated dualities, Shibli articulates a discourse of resistance and portrays the dynamics of domination and oppression associated with occupation.
