Prepositions (ḥurūf al-jarr) constitute foundational elements within the linguistic architecture of the Holy Qurʾān, playing an essential role in establishing syntactic dependencies and directing nuanced semantic values within the textual context of the verses. Adopting an integrated syntactic–semantic approach, this study investigates the prepositions employed in Sūrat al-Maʿārij. Using a descriptive-analytical method, the occurrences of prepositions across the sūrah were systematically extracted, the syntactic attachment (taʿalluq) of each prepositional phrase (jārr wa-majrūr) within the sentential structure was analyzed, and the semantic significations of each particle were evaluated in light of both the Qurʾānic context (siyāq) and the authoritative views of classical grammarians and exegetes. The findings demonstrate that the prepositions in this sūrah—principally bāʾ, lām, min, ʿan, and ḥattā—operate beyond mere formal grammatical markers to actively deepen the rhetorical and semantic strata of the discourse. Specifically, bāʾ denotes adhesion (ilṣāq) and reinforces theological conviction; lām signifies specification (ikhtiṣāṣ), entitlement (istiḥqāq), or semantic reinforcement while accentuating the concept of socio-economic rights; and min foregrounds origin (ibtidāʾ), source, or emanative issuance. The functional diversity of these particles underscores the rigorous precision of Qurʾānic expression and its capacity to harness syntactic structures to consolidate doctrinal and rhetorical themes, transforming these subtle particles into potent discursive instruments for delineating the divine promises and warnings (al-waʿd wa-l-waʿīd).
