During the 1920s and 1930s, German and Swiss linguists working within structural semantics established semantic field theory on the premise that lexical meaning is not autonomous or isolated; rather, words derive their full significance only within an interconnected network structured around a common conceptual domain. To evaluate the efficacy of this framework in literary analysis, this study examines al-Ajniḥah al-Mutakassirah (The Broken Wings) by Gibran Khalil Gibran, a text whose rich vocabulary surrounding love (ʿishq) interacts dynamically with notions of affection, hatred, passion, disenchantment, mysticism, reason, union, separation, attachment, and dependence. Employing a descriptive-analytical method, the research first articulates the theoretical foundations of semantic field theory and then investigates its application to the novella by mapping the conceptual relations among lexical items associated with love. The findings demonstrate that love in Gibran’s thought transcends conventional affective expression, operating instead as a foundational core of identity construction. Whereas evaluating the diverse occurrences of love without this framework risks reducing them to superficial sentimentalism, the application of semantic field theory illuminates the profound philosophical, mystical, and existential dimensions of love in Gibran’s literary corpus.
