Asghar Elahi (1944–2012) is among the contemporary Iranian writers who specialized in psychiatry, and mental-oriented narratives play a fundamental role in his works. This mental orientation sometimes appears merely as a temporary narrative technique and sometimes as a structural element, such as point of view. Various forms of mind-based narrative strategies exist in his works, which have received little scholarly attention. One of these techniques is the representation of collective mentality in storytelling and its various manifestations. This study aims to identify and analyze three unique forms of such representation. The narrative-semantics approach draws attention to the issue of the narrator and their performative role in the process of storytelling. Through a descriptive-analytical method and a close reading of details, this study seeks to determine how narrative structures in storytelling can move beyond monophony and reconstruct intersubjective situations. The findings indicate that the representation of collective mentality in Asghar Elahi’s stories is achieved through three main techniques: collective character portrayal, Rashomon-style point of view, and the use of first-person narration in both singular and plural forms.
