Sūrat al-Wāqiʿah portrays the eschatological reality and the ultimate destinies of humanity through a tripartite taxonomy: “the Companions of the Right” (Aṣḥāb al-Maymanah), “the Companions of the Left” (Aṣḥāb al-Mashʾamah), and “the Foremost” (al-Sābiqūn). The central problem of this study is to elucidate the underlying mechanism governing the oppositional logic of salvation and damnation within this ostensibly tripartite structure, alongside determining how these groups are systematically interrelated. Adopting a descriptive-analytical method and synthesizing Claude Lévi-Strauss’s theory of binary oppositions with Algirdas Julien Greimas’s semiotic square, this study analyzes exegetical data extracted from authoritative Shīʿī and Sunnī sources. The findings reveal that beneath the surface text lies a universal network of binary oppositions (such as right/left, light/darkness, and bounty/deprivation) that, in accordance with Lévi-Straussian structuralism, constitutes the primary engine of meaning production in the sūrah. Concurrently, the Greimasian analysis demonstrates that the “Foremost” does not operate as an isolated ontological category, but rather functions as the ultimate pole of the salvation axis embedded within a formal matrix of contrariety, contradiction, and complementarity with the other groups. This stratified architecture creates deep structural coherence between the binary deep logic and the tripartite surface structure, anchoring the recurring descriptions of Paradise and Hell to a broader cognitive and didactic system. Ultimately, the results substantiate the efficacy of structuralist and semiotic frameworks in formalizing classical exegetical insights and uncovering the semantic architecture of the Holy Qurʾān.
